* Waverley, 11 Jun: 'Earplugs didn't work'

Updated: Jun 16, 2021

(S153) Complaint about noise disturbance from a late-night garden gathering in Waverley Road on night of 10/11 June 2021.

A resident who lives in Lansdown Road, on the far side of the railway line, says: "This week, and tonight in particular, there have been several noisy gatherings in houses and gardens.

It’s the end of term and everyone appreciates that students want to let off a little steam, say their goodbyes etc. —some reasonable noise is to be expected, and you make an effort to ride with it. But after several days of noisy gatherings in back gardens, some of which have gone on till dawn, that effort wears thin. Which is why tonight, when a particularly noisy gathering in a garden on Waverley Road started, my patience finally dried up.

I tried to hunker down with earplugs and let it go, but the group singing and chanting was loud enough to cut through. ... 12.45am found me walking along Waverley to identify the house.. It [was] easy to see the party was at number [xx] because of students in the street outside."

The resident says he complained to a girl who answered the door. The noise from the garden stopped "pretty quickly" but "it did take my intervention".

Update, 15/06/2021: In a follow-up email, the resident adds this comment to the paragraph above: "Unfortunately, although that was true at the time I wrote, after sending the message and returning to bed, the students did move back into the garden, and it did go on until well past dawn."
