* Stanley, 5 Sep: Daytime noise

(21043) Complaint about daytime noise at a property in Stanley Road on 5 September 2021.

Resident wrote to UoB: "This Sunday, the 5th September, a noisy party started about 12.00pm. It involved a large gathering, with a loud group in the rear garden, and loud music inside the house radiating out through the open doors and windows. Some noise from neighbours is inevitable, but these are 3-storey terraces with very small gardens, and the noise generated was so loud I had to abandon what I’d planned for the afternoon.

"My house backs onto [xx] Stanley so was directly affected. After tolerating the noise for several hours, and fearing the noise would go on into the night, at about 4.15pm I decided to call round and explain to the students how disturbing they were, and to ask them to moderate their behaviour."

He says that despite asking two people if he could speak to a tenant, he wasn't able to do so. The second person, a young man, protested that as it was the weekend they could do as they pleased. "I tried to explain that the UoB Local Rules* said something different." When the resident said he would complain to UoB, "his reaction was ’go ahead’."

The resident reports that his complaint was acknowledged both by UoB and the property agents, and that the students made a "heartfelt apology" to him the next day.

*UoB Local Rules state: "Disciplinary action may be taken in the case of: ... Excessive noise that causes a disturbance to other residents at any time of day or night." (my emphasis).
