* Cotham Vale, 22 Jul: 'Loud daytime music'

(21027) Complaint about daytime noise from a property in Cotham Vale on 22 and 23 July 2021.

A resident of Trelawney Road whose garden backs on to Cotham Vale has written both to UoB and the owner of the property to report excessive daytime noise.

His letter to the landlord, dated 23 July, says: "Yesterday morning from 9.30 the residents of [xx] Cotham Vale have had their music so loud we could hear it inside our house. My wife is trying to work on Zoom calls with fellow NHS staff and is finding it very difficult. It was the same again this morning. I believe there have been issues at other times.

"I tried to get their attention over the fence but they are inside and couldn’t hear as there was music blaring with all their windows open.

"In a residential area this causes considerable problems as houses and gardens are close together. Next door to me is a pregnant woman with a toddler, 2 nurses working shifts at the BRI, a surgeon and member of the intensive care unit. I know they find the noise disturbing their rest extremely detrimental to their well-being. There are also lots of home workers and families trying to get on with life or enjoy their gardens.

"It is not the first time we have had a problem with noise from no. [xx] even though the tenants are newly arrived, and it has not been restricted to the mornings. Yesterday afternoon I walked along Cotham Vale at about 4.30 and the front windows were open and music was blaring across the street.

"There is an unproportional number of HMOs in Cotham Vale and it is a huge problem for other residents if respect for others' ability to enjoy the quiet of their own homes is ignored. In line with Council advice we are keeping a log of disturbances."

Note: UoB rules for students living in the community state: "Disciplinary action may be taken in the case of ... Excessive noise that causes a disturbance to other residents at any time of day or night."
